  • The Block Recaps: Guest Room and Bathroom

Something happened that made Shayna feel sick to her stomach... Oh, I just can't wait to be King! Source: realestate.com.au Hi everyone, and welcome to another round of armchair judging. I am your resident work-from-home (WFH) Judge, here to comment on what we, as the uneducated but overly opinionated masses, really think. This week, I’m not going to add the usual 'what we were hoping for' this week, as we’ve already seen that on previous bedrooms and bathrooms, plus - we have two rooms per couple to get through, and you have things to do, like unloading your dishwasher. Let’s go! First up - Can we rate Shayna’s earrings? Cos it’s a 10 for mine. Love! Yay rainbow! Source: Channel 9. Okay, moving on. Harry and Tash (1920s) Guest room ZERO 1920s. Completely forgotten. Not even mentioned... Source: realestate.com.au My first thought was wow - I actually like it. The colours tie in really nicely - the art is in tune with the bedding, and oranges and blues make for a calming, nice guest room. I also like that they didn’t go ‘full kids room’ cos that’s super presumptuous, like, what if I just want to move in and make that my handbag room for all my Bali Mimco knock-offs? I will say that I am irked by a singular bedside table (symmetry is King) and the room is very small, although that’s probably not their fault. Nothing surprising or exciting, but it’s a nice clean hotel-style room. They have a sense of humour too, says Shayna: Omg, they're so CRAZY! Source: Channel 9. Bathroom Pink is always okay with me. But wait. HORROR ensues... Source: realestate.com.au As you know, the first time they delivered a bathroom was triggering, the second was a welcome change and nod to the theme, so this went well. Even though they said they don't have to relate to theme for this week, that's odd. Like, welcome to my 1920s house...EXCEPT THAT ROOM, DON'T GO IN. So jarring! But I digress. First thoughts were that again, I was happy they have tied in the colour scheme with greys, white and pinks. The subway vertical tile is a no from me, just cos of all the grout but again, Brahhhhtin, they’re totally not the ones cleaning it. Personally, I don’t think the wooden vanity goes, to me that’s more of a hippie/beachy vibe. I also think the judges were being really harsh, losing their minds and overly critical over..something to do with tiles in the corner of the shower that wasn't totally even or something? I barely understood the issue, when Shayna said it made her ‘feel sick’ they were speaking like they forgot to put the toilet in the bathroom or something. Get a grip! The Block Judges: 23.5/30 WFH Judge: 7/10 George and Sarah (1940s) Guest room What a gorgeous view. Source: realestate.com.au I don’t think anyone could not look at that sky-high wallpaper and ceiling and not think, wow! I loved it, and the fact that they are a bit bold with their wallpaper choices overall. Yes, sometimes they are not winners, but this one most definitely is. It's not overpowering like last time but is still quite striking and I like that they take design chances and aren’t totally beige with their taste. My only nitpick would be that while I rate the jungle theme and gold monkey statue (I want one), the zebra print seemed to be from a different style and time period (lol, not that anyone cares…) and needs to go. Bathroom What era is this again? Source: realestate.com.au Okay, the good: I do like how cohesive the colour scheme is. It looks clean and I do love George’s continuation of the hidden loo. I will say though that Shayna is also correct about the difficulty in adjusting the shower temperature, it looks super annoying, and the mirror looks a little cheap. Overall, very spacious vanity and well designed - I just do wish it fit in with their other two pink bathrooms so their style flowed throughout the home. The Block Judges: 29/30 WFH Judge: 8/10 Dan and Jade Guest bedroom But what happens if - gasp - you have a girl who likes space as well?! Source: realestate.com.au Okay my first thought was...no. The colours in the first room are very...army. Black, brown, green, plus as all WFH Judges know, black and brown do not go. Also, stylising towards a ‘guessed’ buyer is such a risk. Like, they just decided this will be a boy’s room? What if an elderly couple move in? A gay couple who don’t want kids? A boss bitch? I think it’s weird to spend money on child’s toys, and not even particularly nice ones at that. On the plus side, the stylised ‘girls’ room fared batter, because it is more universal - this really could be for any sex or age. Like Darren said, ‘feminine but not girly’. It was better styling, open and beachy which I like. Overall, to be fair I think two rooms over one was definitely strong, just tone it down or you are pigeonholing the buyer. Bathroom Storage for days - come on judges, be nicer! Source: realestate.com.au Well, many may disagree, but I don't mind this. I know the green would not be to everyone’s taste, but I appreciate this season of Block contestants at least keeping it unique and fun. It may look a little dated (was that the point? Are eras suddenly back?) but otherwise I think Darren was being a little harsh in his critique, and watching Dan upset I was like noo don't make him sad! They worked so hard and delivered an extra bedroom, pay your respects! I think the colours looked lovely and it seemed homely and warm - just what their 'ideal kids' would like. The Block Judges: 25.5/30 WFH Judge: 7/10 Luke and Jasmine (1910s) Guest bedroom I'm brushing up on lookin' down, I'm workin' on my ROAR! Sorry, this room brings it out of me... Okay, I’ll be honest - I’m so conflicted. As a kids room - I love it. It’s a gorgeous jungle theme, it’s super cute, great use of space, the wallpaper is lovely and the hanging chair is super cool, like, I want it and I’m in my 30s. But again - what if a buyer comes in who doesn’t have or want kids? I suppose though then I should go back and fault whenever contestants put in handbags or ties, so that’ not really fair, is it? But there’s a difference between getting rid of a pair of slippers and a built-in bunk bed. Also, there was the 'copying' controversy, but who there wasn't looking at Pinterest? Overall, as a kids room, I adore it. As a guest room, you’d really have to make a lot of changes with that bunk. Just ‘deciding’ your buyer is a family is wishful thinking. Bathroom See, this is where a timber vanity belongs, says the chick with crumbs on her Kmart tracksuit. Source: realestate.com.au Beautiful. ‘Light and spacious’ as Neale said, and I agree. Loved the gold accents such as the towel holders and sinks, and I’m with Darren - love dried flowers that won’t die! Era nod… Hello? Anyone? Anyone at all? Source: GiPHY Block Judges: 30/30 WFH Judge: 8.5/10 Jimmy and Tam Guest bedroom Do you think each week when Tam looks at wallpaper she's like, BIGGER! BRIGHTER! MORE PALMS! The ONLY contestants still adhering to a theme with a cohesive look throughout. Feels somewhat unfair, but then, it’s still the best cos I ADORE their beachy style, and they are the only couple with continuous style that follow the era and beach living with impeccable taste. Yes, they’re my favs, I won’t hide it. Anyway. If I had to nitpick, I don’t love the bench near the window, it looks cheap and uncomfortable, and it would be better if cushioned like proper bay window nook. I’ll also add that the windowsills in the rooms of all contestants should have been painted too, the black is hideous. Bathroom Question: How do you top the 11/10 that was last week? Answer: You can't. It’s very beachy, and peach is fun. I kind of wish there was more peach than terrazzo-look tile, so I totally disagree with the judges - more colour, more! Architecturally, I love how they painted the roof with all the colours against each other in a cool pattern, but nothing can top their pink masterpiece from last week. The Block Judges: 29/30 WFH Judge: 8.5/10 Overall, Luke and Jasmine had a deserved win - they just better hope their buyers aren't full of Karens who want to use the room for gift wrapping. Thoughts? • The Block Recaps: Backyard Week

Here to say what we're all really thinking, like...why didn't you just build a bigger f*cking fence? It's the final week - will our Blockheads finish on a high? Source: 9now *Spoilers ahead* Hi everyone, and welcome to our final round of armchair judging for 2020! This week, our Blockheads delivered some sort of side yard device, a backyard and a pool that would fit perhaps me and my dog, if half my body was out of the water. I am your resident Work From Home (WFH) Judge, here to say what we're all really thinking, like...why didn't you just build a bigger f*cking fence? Let's go! First up, the judges: This intro was fine, finally. No dancing, just telling us who you are. Also, I just had a crazy memory guys - remember the eras?! Haha, good one! But seriously. Forget them. Source: GiPHY Harry and Tash (1920s) Oh my gosh guys, just writing 1920s makes me lol. But moving on. What we got: I've given you the full spectrum for the finale. Source: 9now I thought my fellow Victorians delivered a lovely space. As In-Person Judge Darren noted, the backyard tree (Pic 2) was truly 'spectacular,' and added a lovely, homely vibe. Being guided through the back, it felt luxurious, like, I would froth showing this off to friends and feel rich. Also to be fair to them as a pair, I'm no renovator, but getting a pool and a backyard entertaining area with furniture for 25k is pretty great. That said, adding a wall to block off the lovely arch they created in Front Yard Week was a mistake (Pic 4). If you are concerned about privacy, why not put the door within the archway?! Overall: The judges are a bit overly critical of Harry and Tash, it's like they walk in ready to be annoyed. Yes, ditch the wall, but otherwise, it is a luxurious backyard, the entertaining area and outdoor setting is lush and it flows on brilliantly. WFH Judge: 8.5/10 George and Sarah (1940s) These two are loveable, although I don't find they have had much of a cohesion vision throughout the series. That said, man, did they deliver this week. What we got: Ooh la-la! Source: 9 now This was gorgeous! I’m a sucker for fairy lights, and so sitting around the Japanese maple in that zen-style courtyard (Pic 1) just looks so calming and lovely. The perfect spot to sip your tea and judge what is going over at the neighbour's place next door. Mmm, judging. That said, there was no big area for kids to play - guess that only matters in Harry and Tash’s front yard - but I got over this quickly when I saw the incredible BBQ and pizza oven entertaining area. Yum! Whilst the judges loved the outdoor setting that accompanied this zone, I personally would have made it a bigger seating area for entertaining - this would pretty much just fit my husband and father-in-law. That said, I did like some of the nuances they thought of, like taking the terrible Melbourne weather into consideration with a heater over their outdoor setting, and a print of the Elwood beach boxes along the pool area. Brilliant. Overall: A truly fantastically thought out yard, with great nods to it actually being a beach house. Plus, those egg chairs they added are sick, who doesn’t want to swing in one for 20 seconds only to realise they’d rather sit still? ME! WFH Judge: 9.5/10 Dan and Jade (1930s) Whilst the others seem very luxurious, this is the first yard that seems actually family orientated. What we got: Grass! Source: 9now There’s a garden area for kids to play or a dog to run, a big deck to hang out and have friends round for a meal. With an outdoor shower and pool, it definitely was the most spacious area for entertaining so far, and the landscaping was lovely. That said, it definitely needed more styling around the pool area, and the outdoor shower, whilst unique, putting it over the dirt probably wasn't the best call, but can be easily fixed. Overall: They probably have the best ‘bare bones’ for a family house with their landscaped yard - but Neale was correct in stating that they could have stylised this themselves for a bit more ‘wow’. WFH Judge: 8.5/10 Luke and Jasmine (1910s) I just love anything with curvature and arches. So sleek, so sexy, so stylish, and these two always deliver. What we got: To die for. Source: 9now The curved daybed is very cool. I just adore their cohesive continuations throughout the home. I’d need to know if it’s comfy - Shayna says it is (also sidenote: ultimate selfie area) - and it’s a really eye-catching, useable piece. The water feature is very calming too. That said, the small fencing alongside their home and their neighbours is insane, I would HATE the lack of privacy...seriously, why are these houses all so squashed together? They just need that fence to be at least...three times bigger than this! Look, if you know, you know. Source: GiPHY I know the judges have taken issue with the BBQ not being somewhat built into the backyard area, but this doesn’t bother me. Maybe I want to move it to the front or take it on the road? Isn't that what we all do when we go to a BBQ with the old Webber? So that’s fine. That said, I don’t agree with a lack of cover over the deck. The whole look is a little...industrial and not Melbourne - friendly. Like, what's the point of it? It is pool weather and winter weather in one day here, plan accordingly. That said. The pool. Guys. This is ...a resort in Malaga. This is luxury at it’s finest. Imagine inviting your mates over to your resort villa, everyone would hate you. In an amazing way. It would almost make our lack of travel bearable. Overall: The cabana and mini-fridge, outdoor setting, the styling, honestly, I'm dead. The pool is an absolute wow factor for me. WFH Judge: 9.5/10 Jimmy and Tam (1950s) These are the only two who were still clinging onto the theme for dear life. Whilst I personally didn't care for their Area-51-esque front yard (even though they won!) we all wanted to know how they were going to turn their backyard into the scene of a Mexican cartel business meeting. What we got: With cacti, bigger is NOT always better. Source: 9now So, I'll be honest - I flat out don't like breeze bock (Pic 1). I know its 50s and a good nod to the era, but just like asking permission from your husband to get a credit card, some things are best left behind in the past. To me, it just looks cheap and dated. That said, I have a soft spot for trendy Tam, and I agree with Neale in that the backyard is the ‘logical extension’ of the desert wasteland that is the front yard - but this time, paired back (thank f*ck). The cacti in mini planter boxes is where they should stay, and not feel like I’m visiting Area 51: Cya in Nevada. Source: GiPHY The planning of this space was lovely, and I also like that while simple, the entertaining area and deck are large enough for guests. By the pool, I just adore the pink sun chairs and lounges, fun 50s vibes, green artwork, and think it all ties in neatly with their home. That said, I agree a bit with the judges in that the 'indoor changing area' is a bit confusing, but thought the way Shayna put it about them ‘totally missing a beat’ was a bit harsh. I think they also could have added some more WOW pops of colour like they previously had in bathrooms to really drive their kitschy home...uh...home. Overall: I thought it was a fun mix of cacti, 50s and luxury, but just felt a bit...unfinished toward the end. WFH Judge: 8/10 ____ Winners: It's a win for George and Sarah, who have walked away with a newwww carrrr! Lol jks. Just George and Sarah. Noone else. Source: GiPHY Wrap it up: Our poor, exhausted Blockheads have gone home for some well-deserved shut-eye and some vegetables after letting their teeth rot off sponsored fast food for months on end. We'll see them back for the (heart-wrenching) final auction next week - right here on largealmondlatte.com Missed a recap? Catch up on all The Block action here. • The Block Recaps: Living and Dining Rooms

We demand you bring back the Conversation Pit! Okay, this may not have featured. But I wanted it to. Source: Interior Design Ideas Ooh, I've been looking forward to this. I feel the lounge really cements the team's style, and this is one of the first reveals where they really need to tie it all in with the kitchen and dining. I’m your resident work-from-home (WFH) judge, here to talk about what we at home really think of the reveals from the comfort of our own lounge rooms with our couches from Facebook Marketplace and dinner on our laps from Aldi. let's go! Wait. The judges are doing weird things again and just: All of us. Source: GiPHY Harry and Tash (1920s) My dreams of the Art Deco Palace I've been dreaming of have slowly diminished with each passing week that The Block airs. I find myself wishing this era would have gone to Jimmy and Tam, they'd have so much fun. But alas, it was not to be. What we were hoping for: At this rate, I'd just settle for a Deco light... Source: Houzz, Haus and Pinterest What we got: Source: 9now Sigh. Not even the light? I mean, look, is it lavishly styled for a house inspection? Yes. But is it a warm, inviting space for a family of five or more to cosy up on the couch? No. On the good side - the black table and chairs do flow on well from the kitchen, and the judges are correct in saying it elongates the space. I also like how their couch actually faces the tv, so many times when styling it's sideways to look bigger. But they really needed a bigger couch (all the houses did) and this could have been stylised so easily with some deco lights, prints and curtains. Nice, but a wasted opportunity. WFH Judge: 7/10 The Block Judges: /30 George and Sarah (1940s) George and Sarah can be really hit and miss, but at least they're not boring. What we were hoping for: We demand you bring back the Conversation Pit! Source: Interior Design Ideas, Decor Ad What we got: Source: 9now Okay. I'll go from bad to good here. Not sure I love the brick, I'm with Darren there. Bit country. And it looked a bit bare, I probably would have liked some plants around it, as on its own it’s a bit...cold, which is in stark contrast to rest of the house. Additionally, I personally am not into the trend of 'not hanging up' pictures - to me it looks lazy, like you haven’t moved in properly yet. Also, did anyone else find the weird cushion seats next to the fireplace a little...strange? For good points - I thought this home had a much better layout where you can cook at the bench while watching tv, a nice big family area and table to the side - but bring back that conversation pit! WFH Judge: 7/10 The Block Judges: /30 Dan and Jade (1930s) After their win last week, they were pretty high on life, giving them the extra chutzpah they needed to deliver a bomb lounge and dining area to match their curvy kitchen. What we were hoping for: I like golllddd! Source: Inspiration Design Books, Doris Leslie What we got: Source: 9now This looks must cosier in pictures than on screen, don't you think? I felt this was more worthy of a win, perhaps alongside Luke and Jasmine. I'm not sure about this lone wall trend that is continuing on here. Some inbuilt shelves, plants, lamps, anything would have been nice. So bare! That said, the design curved wall is obviously a lovely feature, the black blinds a welcome luxury change, as is the roof lighting. Sidenote - they always serve up food and no-one eats it. Look at that amazing cheese platter - hand it over! WFH Judge: 7.5/10 The Block Judges: /30 Luke and Jasmine (1910s) I felt these two were robbed last week, and so was hoping they would get a return to victory now that they really have settled on an overall curvy and classy theme in their turn of the century maison. What we were hoping for: Might need some thrones to go with those chandeliers... Source: Lounge Architectural Digest, Pinterest, Real Homes What we got: Source: 9now Ooh, how did this not win? Yeah yeah, the heater is in a weird spot, but otherwise: Beachy, tick. Homely, tick. Luxury, tick. Brighton, tick. Cohesion, tick. This was lovely. Beachy, warm, and I absolutely love the table and chairs and how the colour scheme from the kitchen has continued on into the lounge. I will say that the Type A in me hates the painting slightly to the side of the tv. No! Just put another plant there! The couch again is also midget sized - eight people at the table but five on the couch? And as another nitpick, Shayna is correct in saying they need more storage. I think you could fix the fireplace issue by changing the seating arrangement or you know - use ducted heating like everyone else. WFH Judge: 8/10 The Block Judges: /30 Jimmy and Tam (1950s) My favs! A 50s lounge and dining sounded a little hard to get right with the mix of old and new, but I had faith that they would continue their evolution of colour and quirky style. Did they disappoint? What we were hoping for: Well, the pink would certainly match the bathroom... Source: Home Design Lovers, Pinterest What we got: Source: 9now Oh, Jimmy and Tam, why do you hurt me so? This was such a disappointment. As we all now know, they decided to forgo a dining table because they quoted a lack of space/prefer couch and the bench for eating. This made zero sense - it was literally so easy to put a dining table there. Not adequate for a house of this size and value, says Neale, and he’s right. This isn’t your first apartment underneath a nightclub. Also, who makes a $200k kitchen without an area to eat? It was just ridiculous. it's not Jim and Tam's house where we eat in front of the tv (no shame, I do that) it's a Brahhhtin mansion that needs a table. In the end, it was a total dud and awkward use of space. I just have zero understanding of it. Shayna was also correct in stating that the couch looks really closed in. There is a lot of wasted space, and it was really disappointing - and not even 50s or funky! Aside from some great art and storage, this was...upsetting. WFH Judge: 5/10 The Block Judges: /30 ____ Overall, I don't even know who deserved to win. There wasn't a lot of wow and I struggled to write this because I was not moved, I was meh-ed. Here's to next week being more interesting. Missed a recap? Catch up on all The Block action here. We're back every Sunday with WFH Judge thoughts on reveals with Large Almond Latte.

  • The Block Recaps: Studio And Garage Week

We all hang paintings in our garage, yeah? This is where you have to sleep when you get home after one too many beers. Source: 9now *Spoilers ahead* Harry and Tash are once again demonised by the judges, while it seems a 90s pull out sofa is the new frontier. Hi everyone, and welcome to another round of armchair judging! This week, our poor tired contestants who have been living off an energy-fuelled diet of McDonald's were asked to do a garage, studio apartment and bathroom in just one week. Not many finished. But who succeeded? I am your resident Work From Home (WFH) Judge, here to say what we're all really thinking, like, 'Who paints the inside of a garage?' Let's go! First up, the judges need their mandatory wiggle. NOW. Source: GiPHY Harry and Tash (1920s) 1920s, LOL, even just typing that is as distant a memory as sweating in a mosh pit closer than 1.5m apart. What we got: Garage, studio, bathroom. Also, yay pink! Source: 9now So, this was pretty nice! It's funny, I started off being a bit harsh on these two, but that's cos I'm a fellow Victorian. It's like bitching about your sister. You can do it, but if someone else says it, so not okay. That's how I'm feeling with the judges. I think they are way too critical of my Vic mates, and you can see how it's waning on them. They are gonna throw in the towel and head to Hungry Jack's for a rival Big Jack any minute. Now, the garage, fine, whatever, clearly Tesla was sponsoring for the two people in Australia who have one. I actually really liked their studio space. It's light and breezy, someone can actually live in it with a working kitchen, and the bathroom has my new 2020 favourite tile. I know the judges were on them about a desk, but you can set up a laptop at the bench like everyone else. Also - who do they actually think is living here? To me, it's you 19 year old son who sneaks a girl in while he's part time at uni and Woolies, or your nan. Point is, a teen is using it for video games, and a nan or nanny to rest. Chill out about the bloody desk! WFH Judge: 8/10 George and Sarah (1940s) They've been a bit of a mis-match on finding their style all season, but can our loveable daggy couple pull off three rooms in one week? What we got: Source: 9 now Okay, let's start with the garage. I love to sit in a velvet chair staring at paintings after I pull up in my Tesla, how about you guys? Jokes aside, once upstairs - this was great. While darker hues and the styling weren't to my personal taste, the use of space was done really well in the studio apartment. There's a bed, storage, a desk, a Euro laundry and a space for dining, making it totally liveable for one or two people. I personally thought all these spaces could have done with a comfy chair to watch tv on (you don't always want to lie in bed) but it was done well, and the bathroom was a nice continuation of their black and pink theme. Overall, well executed. WFH Judge: 9/10 Dan and Jade (1930s) Source: 9now So, while their garage was like everyone else, the one smart thing they added was a bathroom (far left image). Not a bad idea if you are working out down there / need a quick number 1 before going on a road trip. A good use of space. Upstairs, I felt while the studio was styled nicely, it just needed some updates - the judges were right in stating that they have a desk not near any electrical points (in front of the grey chair), and the tv is in a somewhat awkward position in the corner. Again a well-executed, clean bathroom. I wouldn't call them the winners, but I think they did well. WFH Judge: 7.5/10 Luke and Jasmine (1910s) So, I have pressure on these two, only because I know they are capable of great styling. I wanted a win for them, because like Harry and Tash, they were totally robbed in last week's front yard debacle. What we got: Like, come over and style my house pls. Source: 9now So, the garage was pretty standard, which was fine. All you really want is some good storage in there and for it not to look like the before shot on the set of Hoarders. As for their studio, Luke and Jas have totally nailed their Hamptson-esque styling, and I like how they have carried that into their studio. I would love staying here, to be honest, like a cute little Air b'n'b. I think you could easily study off the kitchen table, although perhaps a better use of space there would have been a desk over the lounge seating no one will really use. I think Sarah and George have the edge with a better kitchen and a laundry, although this large bathroom is great and also beautifully done. WFH Judge: 8.5/10 Jimmy and Tam (1950s) These two and me are like those annoying on-again-off-again couples you know and you're like, make a decision already. During the bed and bathrooms we were in love, but then during lounge and yard week, I was seriously questioning our relationship. This week though, add me as a +1 on that wedding invite, cos we are totally on again! What we got: We are the three best friends that anyone ever had! Source: 9now So, these two were the first couple to make better use of the garage space. Putting in a home gym was a great idea, and love that they thought to add a tv. Working out without a tv show on = sacrilege. Like, couldn't even contemplate working out normally, let alone without Netflix! I thought it was odd when Neale said buyers may be turned off. I barely ever work out, but just thinking about it or knowing I could, would be enough to keep me satisfied. Upstairs, the studio was done beautifully. I'm sure we all breathed a sigh of relief after the utter catastrophe that was the desert wasteland of last week. This was airy and bright, a lovely colour palette to go with their whole 'Palm Springs' vibe, the bathroom looks great and light, and an overall good space for study and entertaining. My one sore point though is that I think a proper bed is better than a sofa bed in here. Realistically, would you come up here to use a kitchen and a desk but not sleep? That's weird. Either just be an office, or have a proper bed - we all know sleeping on the fold out is a punishment. WFH Judge: 8.5/10 ____ Winners: It's a clear win for Sarah and George, who made their space the most functionable as a live-alone space. Wrap it up: No-one really sucked this week, and it was a lot of work. Hopefully they're having a bit of a break with a chocolate McFlurry and getting ready for the last week! Missed a recap?
